Carol

How did you come to be working as a career coach?

After 15 years in HR it was time for a change. I wrote down all the aspects of my HR and Recruitment positions that I enjoyed and it was pretty close to the job description of a career coach. I researched and completed the required qualifications and here I am.

How do your career coaching clients’ benefit from your background and experience?

Through my experience in HR and recruitment I have a strong knowledge of the WA job market. I understand the recruitment process and what recruiters and hiring managers are looking for.

I am qualified and experienced with career transition or re-direction. And as a Professional member of the Career Development Association of Australia I am aware of trends in recruitment, labour market and career coaching.

What approach do you take to coaching?

My approach is solution focused. Using this approach I can tailor career coaching to my clients individual needs and concerns. My goal is to provide my client with support in making informed decisions about their career development and then turning those decisions into actions.

What can clients’ expect when they work with you?

Clients can expect practical steps to achieve their career objectives. They can expect assistance with decision making, increased self awareness and an understanding of career development and job searching in the current labour market.

What has been your greatest challenge as a career coach?

My greatest challenge with every client is to develop a path forward so they are in control of their career and they know how to plan so career opportunities may present themselves. As everyone seeks career coaching for different reasons, every ones path is different.

What are your pet peeves?

Late – I hate being late.

Who would you most like to have over for dinner and why?

Jamie Oliver – in the hope that he might cook or at least provide some inspiration and/or cooking tips.

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever received from a client?

Early in my career the feedback I received was that I was “really nice”. It dawned upon me that really nice was not the aim. So I changed my focus and now the feedback has changed to “really helpful” (I am still nice!)

Louise

How did you come to be working as a career coach?

As I have over 15 years experience within Recruitment, becoming a Career Coach works hand in hand with coaching people on finding a new position or advising on different techniques to find a new suitable position.

How do your career coaching clients’ benefit from your background and experience?

I have internal and external experience and believe I pass on some ‘tricks of the trade’ to clients, both from a consultant’s perspective and from an internal HR role.

What approach do you take to coaching?

One of the biggest things in becoming a Career Coach is being very mindful of each client’s particular situation. The clients I have previously coached have worked in organisations for a long time and have been made redundant. It is a big transition for people to come to terms with. Understanding each individual’s situation and gaining trust is important. Career coaching is about empowering our clients with the right tools to assist them in moving forward.

What can clients’ expect when they work with you?

Honesty, finding comfort in the current position they may be in, for example, recently being made redundant and above all confidence in themselves.

What has been your greatest challenge as a career coach?

I recently ran workshops for people who were recently made redundant. Some of the staff had been employed with our client for over 30 years so it was a huge transition for them. The biggest challenge was gaining their trust and confidence that I was genuinely there to help them in this difficult but exciting time.

And now for the fun stuff…..

What are your pet peeves?

Dishonest people. Drives me mad.

Who would you most like to have over for dinner and why?

I would love to sit down with Tony Robbins or Louise Hay. Both are people I could learn so much from.

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever received from a client?

Feedback from a candidates who I’ve coached through a redundancy letting me know they got a job interview, or even better a new role! That’s the best feeling ever.
